Post Re: Welche Musik???

A History of Cypress Hill

1988:

Havana-born Senen Reyes (Sen Dog) and his younger brother Ulpiano Sergio Reyes (Mellow Man Ace), who moved from Cuba to the Los Angeles suburb of Southgate with their family in 1971. There they formed the rap group DVX (Devasting Vocal Excellence) with Italian-American Lawrence Muggerud (DJ Muggs) originally of Queens, New York and Mexican -Cuban L.A. native, Louis (B-Real) Freese.

After Mellow Man Ace split for a solo career, the remaining trio renames themselves Cypress Hill; named after a street that runs through the South Central hood they call home. Cypress Hill's logo has been influenced by their affection for 70's rock groups as DJ Muggs points out "You can see a lot of that in the Cypress Hill image. A lot of the image from our group comes from Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. That's why it's all the way it is- the skulls, the dark and everything."

1990: The trio purvey their pro-pot massage and hardcore rapping style to mostly Latino audiences in and around L.A., recording early demos of "The Phuncky Feel One" and a song called "Trigga Happy Nigga" which was renamed "How I Could Just Kill A Man." The latter become the band's first hit after they got a 65,000 dollar record deal by Philadelphia's Ruff House label which is distributed by Columbia Records/Sony.

1991: Cypress Hill released its self-titled debut ?Cypress Hill? with such classics as "Pigs," "Latin Lingo," "Tres Equis", "How I Could Just Kill A Man," "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk" and "Hand On The Pump." The Source magazine credited their debut with: "One of the best new albums of '91" and the record received platinum status. Cypress Hill made no bones about where the group stood; the members became conscientious supporters of hemp legalization and official musical spokesmen for the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws (NORML). In the words of High Times magazine, Cypress Hill "ignited a revolution." National newsweeklies like Newsweek and Entertainment Weekly cited the trio's stance as hemp-culture icons.

1992: Cypress Hill released its first single, "The Phunky Feel One" (which was never commercially available) However, the B-side gangsta rap classic "How I Could Just Kill A Man," starts to get college radio play and become the #1 most requested song at influential urban station WBLS in New York. Cypress  Hill goes on to sell a million copies in U.S. The single climbed into the Top 40 of the Billboard charts and was voted for the nomination of a Hot Rap Single.

DJ Muggs began his producing career by helming House of Pain's debut ?Fine Malt Lyrics?- which featured B-Real on accompanying vocals on the track ?Put Your Head Out? and goes on to work with Funkdoobiest and the Beastie Boys.

Band begins to gain more public visibility by appearing on the side stage at '92 Lollapalooza and in March '92, Cypress Hill appears on the cover of High Times magazine.

1993: Cypress Hill released its second album, Black Sunday, which debuts at #1 in Billboard, registering the highest first-week SoundScan sales for a rap  album up to that point, with the hit single, "Insane In The Brain" leading the way to double-platinum in U.S. and 3.25 million worldwide. The single "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That" is released and the video, which initiated the use of horror movie imagery in hip-hop, reigned supreme for the next year.

Cypress Hill gained even more exposure by appearing on "Saturday Night Live," where they're banned from future musical guest spots nafter DJ Muggs lights up a blunt on-air while the group trashes their equipment during the aptly titled second number, "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That." The same year, Cypress headlined the  "Soul Assassins" club tour with House of Pain and Funkdoobiest.  This was followed by college dates with 7 Year Bitch and Rage Against the Machine, proving their versatility and ability to entertain a diverse audience. Further proof of this was  their two collaborations on the hit "Judgment Night" soundtrack with alternarock gods Sonic Youth ("I Love You Mary Jane&quot and Pearl Jam  ("Real Thing&quot. James Bernard, writer of The Source, criticized Cypress Hill's second album Black Sunday by claiming they were choosing a "White audience". In addition he attacked their "Insane In The Brain" video because "white" people are diving. Moreover he criticized Cypress Hill's appearances at rock festivals such as Lollapalooza to which  B-real replied with some not-so-friendly lines like: "I was kind of bummed today, I read The Source and I read what James Bernard wrote about us, he didn't like Black Sunday. I know San Francisco is his home town, so if you are here tonight, fuck you.everyone say 'fuck The Source'."

1994: After a U.K. tour that winter, Cypress Hill once again appear on the side stage at the '94 Lollapalooza Festival and at that summer's '94 Woodstock and introduced newest member, ex-Beastie boy percussionist Eric Correa (Bobo), son of salsa legend William Correa (Willie Bobo).

Cyrpess Hill receives their props and are named Best Rap Group in the Rolling Stone Music Awards poll by readers and critics.

1995: Cypress Hill was headlines on '95 Lollapalooza with Hole, Sonic Youth,  Pavement, Sinéad O'Connor, Beck the Jesus Lizard, and the Mighty Mighty  Bosstones. They also contributed a track, "I Wanna Get High" (Recorded at '95 Lollapalooza), to Capricorn release of High Times magazine-sponsored ?Hempilation? album to benefit NORML (National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws).

The group?s third release, ?Cypress Hill III- Temples of Boom?, debuts on the charts at #3, on its way to platinum-plus sales of more than 1.5 million U.S. The record featured the hit single, "Throw Your Set In The Air," "Illusions" and "Boom Biddy Bye Bye." The record featured rap heavyweights U-God and the RZA, of Wu-Tang Clan, who produced the track "Killa Hill Niggas." MTV thought the lyrics were violent and inflammatory and refused to play their clips fromTemples of Boom. Cypress Hill countered by arguing  they weren?t celebrating violence but reflecting the reality of streetlife in their lyrics and videos. Sen Dog had taken a break from the band to focus on his punk-rap band SX-10 and doesn?t appear on Temples of Boom nor does he tour with them. Rumours flew that he?d left the band but as we find later, most rumours are bullshit, this was far from the case.

1996: Cypress Hill spent much of the year on the road, headlining shows with 311 and The Pharcyde before hitting road with the inaugural "Smokin' Grooves" tour that summer. ?Smokin? Grooves featured Ziggy Marley, The Fugees, Busta Rhymes and A Tribe Called Quest. Later that year, they release a nine-song EP? ?Unreleased & Revamped?, which brought together some rare remixes never before available commercially.

1997: DJ Muggs cut a solo album called ?Muggs Presents: The Soul Assassins Chapter 1?, with members of Wu-Tang Clan, Goodie Mob, MC Eiht, Call 'O Da Wild, Dr. Dre, KRS-One, Wyclef Jean, Mobb Deep and last but not least Cypress Hill  with "Battle of 2001". B-Real collaborates with Busta Rhymes, Coolio, LL Cool J and Method Man on "Hit 'Em High," from the multi-platinum "Space-Jam" soundtrack. He also hooked up with Dr. Dre, Nas and KRS-One on "East Coast Killer, West Coast Killer," from Dr. Dre's hit Aftermath album, and produces and records his proteges? bow, ?The Psycho Realm?, with L.A.-based Latino brothers Gustavo "Duke" and Jacken "Sick jacken" Gonzales. Cypress Hill once again participates in "Smokin' Grooves" with George Clinton and Erykah Badu among others.

1998: Sen Dog releases Get Wood Sampler with his punk-metal hybrid SX-10 on Jordan Schur's Flip label and returns to Cypress Hill fold for band's fourth album, ?IV? featuring the single Tequila Sunrise, and joins them for yet another stint on "Smokin' Grooves," this time with Wyclef Jean and the Refugee Allstars, Gang Starr, Busta Rhymes and Canibus.

1999: St. George's Dixie College in Utah had a problem with Cypress Hill. Their concert together with Murder City Devils on the Soularium Music label was going to be cancelled. The college wanted to prevent them from performing on April 2nd 1999 for fears of  violence that might be caused by the show. Mark Peterson, the college's principal, questioned the security measures. Cypress Hill reassured Mr. Peterson with their peaceful stance and they were permitted to play at last.

Jason Nevins produced a strange dancefloor-remix of Cypress Hill's classic "Insane In TheBrain," which couldn't reach the huge success of the original, and besides, Cypress fans thought it sucked and wouldn?t buy it anyway. Furthermore, they took part in the 3D- video Kingpin: Life Of Crime by doing the music for the street-based shoot em up.

In 1999 Cypress also found themselves as headliners of the German festival Rock Am Ring along with Lauryn Hill, Alanis Morissette, Garbage and Metallica. Much to the dismay of many North American fans, the band cancelled their spot on the Vans Warped-Tour (they were replaced by Eminem) to work on two albums simultaneously at Ameraycan Studios. The first to be released was the long-awaited Spanish language album, Los Grandes Éxitos En Español  in December 1999 which was followed by a tour to many Latin countries in support of the record.  Jacken from Psycho Realm and Mellow Man Ace contributed toward the translation of lyrics and many new ears heard the vocals of Fermin, front man of  Mexican rap crew ?Control Machete.?

2000: ?Cypress Hill V-Skull & Bones? drops in April and is a two-disc set.  Disc one or Skull, is all hiphop in the traditional sense, and B-Real?s vocals have never been better. Disc two, called Bones, is a tribute to Cypress? love and respect for metal and is all rock based.  This duality is demonstrated in the release of two versions of the same song, ?Rap Superstar? and ?Rock Superstar.?  The release features commentary by such recording artists as Eminem, Xzibit and Everlast.  July 2000 will bring Cypress Hill all over the United States with Limp Bizkit in a free tour which promises to be one of the biggest events of the summer.  Cypress Hill is truly a rap success story, because their star burns with a steady flame and will never have to worry about the burn-out of the one hit comet. They have the respect of artists in not only the rap genre but the rock genre as well and the love of fans from around the world.  Now THAT?S a music career.
